Jenison Athletic Booster Meeting, May 14, 2012

Varsity Boys Baseball – The varsity team is 12-6 overall as of last week Friday.  We have won 9 of the last 10 games with a current 7 game winning streak.  We are playing solid baseball with great defense and equally great pitching.  We are currently tied for 3rd in the league with several other teams.  We finish the league with Rockford next week and Grand Haven the following.  Districts will be played in West Ottawa on May 29th starting at 4:00 vs Holland.

JV Boys Baseball - The JV baseball team is currently 15-1.  We have played solid baseball throughout the season, and have a tremendous amount of talent in the sophomore class.  The guys are extremely hard working, focused, and have benefitted from strong pitching, defense, and hitting.  The highlights of the season include two wins over both Hudsonville and Grandville.

Freshman Boys Baseball - The Freshman Baseball team has battled their way through the early season and is preparing for important League contests against Rockford. During the first few weeks, the Freshman Wildcats maintained a 5-4 record, losing three of those games after leading in the last inning.  After a rough stretch in late April, the team has rebounded nicely in the last week, winning four in a row and fighting back to a 9-8 record. Pitching is getting strong, defense is improving, and hitting has been consistently good. The Freshman Cats are poised for a strong finish as we enter the last few weeks of the season!

Varsity Boys Golf – Jenison currently holds a 4-4 conference record. We’ve pulled out a close one by tie breaker against West Ottawa, had a couple wins with a little more comfortable point spread and some where we have learned some lessons for next time.  In the Forest Hills Invitational, where there were 19 teams and 114 golfers, Logan Sochaki placed 5th (74) and Taylor Augustat 18th (79).  Most impressive was that this tournament was filled with many of the best in the state and had a number of college coaches watching.

JV Boys Golf – The season record is 7-5.  The team is in the middle of the pack in tournaments in the OK Red.  The kids continue to improve every day. They are much better today, then they were they first started.  We have 4 matches left.

Varsity Girls Soccer – The varsity soccer team finished the regular OK Red Conference Season tied for 5th place.  Despite a tough early schedule and a rash of nagging injuries, our young team has been very competitive, even in one of the toughest conferences in the state.  Despite playing an incredibly tough schedule, our offense is on pace to score more goals than any Jenison girls team in the past ten years, and our defense has returned to form, recording 4 shutouts so far this season.  Up next is the conference tournament beginning on Thursday at Grandville.

JV Girls Soccer – Update not available at time of post

Freshman Girls Soccer – Update not available at time of post

Varsity Girls Softball –   The softball team is making a fine showing in their last OK Red season. They are 6 and 4 in the conference with games against Rockford tomorrow and Hudsonville on May 21st. They are 18 and 10 overall. The highlight of this past week was a win over Mattawan after a loss. The game was tight and it was 2 to1 going into their last at bat. Great defensive plays were made to win the game! This weekend the team will be at the U of M invitational which is always good competition and fun for the team to spend the night together!

F/JV Softball – The year started kind of slow with a lot of inexperience but has the season continues the girls have been improving greatly. They are really starting to mesh, as we move forward to the end of the year! We will continue to improve throughout the summer as we continue to play.

Varsity Girls Tennis – Although the season is not over yet, the tennis team is doing well in a tough conference.  They have battled injuries and readjusted numerous times.  The girls have shown endurance and positive attitudes.

JV Girls Tennis – The JV Girls Tennis team finished their season on Friday, May 11.  The season was a building year for the team as we only had ten players for the majority of the season.  Most of our time was spent working on the basic fundamentals of tennis, such as groundstrokes, serves, and the strategies involved with playing doubles.  While we did not win any of our matches, there was noticeable improvement in many of our flights.  The girls have been encouraged to play in the off season, including in our Jenison Summer Tennis Camp through the Community Education Program.  We hope to build the team in the future and start a nice feeder program by involving more elementary and junior high students in the wonderful game of tennis.

Varsity Boys Track – This season was one of the most successful in recent memory.  We won three dual meets, which we have not done in quite some time.  We were in dog-fights with West Ottawa and Grandville – so we’ve made a very respectable jump from the cellar.  Moving into the new conference will give this program a true fighting chance.  Highlights of this year include 90 boys on the roster – with a very young team we should truly improve next year school records in the discus – Alec Snyder (153’11″) & Steven Meekhof tied the school record in the 100M. We have had dual victories over Grand Haven, Muskegon and Hudsonville (first win in a dual against Hudsonville in quite some time).  We had: a 3rd place finish at the Comstock Park invitational & a
4th place finish at the Cedar Springs invitational.  With a great 8th grade class moving into our school next year, we see tremendous opportunities for this program to make strides and improve.

Varsity Girls Track – Our season began with 56 athletes, the largest team in at least a decade with many freshmen or first time contributors. We have been blessed with a group of talented, hard working, focused and funny ladies! Our mantra this spring has been- “A Commitment to Excellence” and we reinforce a “Champion Mentality” in all that we do.  The transformation our program has taken on has been outstanding and it’s a testament to our amazing student-athletes.  Season highlights include 2nd place finishes at two invitational’s, defeating a previously unbeaten Hudsonville team and coming within 15 points of defeating one of the top programs in the state-East Kentwood. At the OK RED conference Championships last Friday, we performed above and beyond our expectations, with numerous lifetime personal records, 2 event champions- Taylor Hopp in the 100M and our 4×100 Relay consisting of Melissa Vu, McKenna Mattson, AJ Mazure and Taylor Hopp, as well as several others finishing 2nd or 3rd in the toughest conference in the state.  Our athletes have currently broken 4 school records- Lexi Haskins in Pole Vault, Taylor Hopp in the 100M & 200M, and the 4×100 Relay, with potentially two more records going down within the next 3 weeks.  The best indicator of where our program is headed may be announced tomorrow, when invitations to the team state finals (Hosted by Jenison) will be announced.  Jenison hasn’t been one of the 16 schools invited in at least 15 years but……we shall see!

Varsity Girls Waterpolo – Women’s water polo has one of the largest teams in recent history with 31 girls.  The Varsity team is a young one, with 6 Sophomores that were pulled up.  We have had a pretty good season with several tournaments including one down in Naperville, Illinois.  We recently took third place in Districts, losing to the team we beat last year, Zeeland.  We are currently ranked 9th in state and have to play the 8th ranked team, East Kentwood, to make it into one of the coveted 8 places in the state tournament.  This happens Friday night at Regionals.

JV Boys and COED Waterpolo – We have had the luxury of having enough kids to have 3 teams. Our Boys A team is undefeated 10-0 so far going into our championship tournament this weekend as the #2 seed only behind Rockford.  Our Girls/Co-ed A team is 8-1-1 so far this season.  The only loss was to Spartan, which is a Lansing based team and our tie was with Hudsonville who we will be facing this weekend at the Championship Tournament for some well needed redemption.  Last but not least our 6th Grade and under Co-ed team is 9-1 their only loss was to East Kenwood this past weekend.  They are going to play this weekend in the Championship Tournament as well being submitted as Jenison’s B Team as the 11th seed.  The boys and girls have been putting in a ton of effort this season and I look forward to a challenging weekend which will hopefully will end with Coach Nate and I being thrown in the pool and being able to hold a unnecessarily large trophy over our heads for both the boys and girls team.

Jenison Athletic Booster Meeting, February 13, 2012

Varsity Boys Basketball – Basketball took a seat on the bench Friday, February 10, as real life took the floor.  The annual “Pink Out” basketball game/fundraiser/recognition event was attended by over 2,000 people on an evening when icy roads and blizzard conditions could have been an excuse to stay home.  Over $7,000 in cash was collected for breast cancer research and cure thanks to donations from the crowd including $5,000 from an anonymous donor.  That donor may have been moved like the rest of us by the program staged between the boys and girls games where cancer survivors and victims and their families where recognized and honored by the Jenison community.  The boys played well against Rockford trailing by five at half and cutting the OK Red league leaders lead to two points with two minutes to go before going final 51 – 43 in favor of Rockford.  The loss puts the Wildcats in fifth place in the OK Red at 5 – 6 (5 – 11 overall).  The Wildcat boys continue to play well behind OK conference leading scorer and senior Eric Evans and support from the other starters Cory Fredricks, Nick Winchel, Cory Berrigear and Luke Diekevers.  The last regular season home game is Friday, February 24 vs. Grand Haven.  MHSAA districts start March 5.

JV Boys Basketball – Jenison JV Basketball team consists of Jake Arntson, Brett Bethke, Luke Krombeen, Sean Keeney, Gabe Miller, Patrick Leatherman, Grant Harshberger, Marcus Connolly, Darian Dismukes, Max Sievers, Mitch Huizen, Brady Vis, and Tyler Sigler.   As of 2-10-2012 they have compiled a 8-7 record with wins against Caledonia, Wyoming Park, Grandville twice, Zeeland East, Muskegon, Grand Haven, West Ottawa,  and their losses have come against Tri-Unity, Hudsonville twice, West Ottawa, Rockford twice, and East Kentwood.  They have reached a 5-6 record in conference play.  Let the excitement continue as most of their games have been decided by less than six points.  We have become accustomed to down to the wire finishes this season.

Freshman Boys Basketball - Their current record stands at 2-12 and next up is West Ottawa at home. Since the last recap, the Freshman Boys’ Basketball team has gone 1-9 with a close loss to Grand Haven.  They won their previous home game against Grandville 53-47 which was a payback game for the loss encountered earlier in the season at Grandville.  Their current record stands at 2-14 and next up are two road dates with Catholic Central and East Kentwood.

Varsity Girls BasketballJanuary has been a challenging month for the Varsity Girls to say the least.  Playing the OK Red teams has netted us zero wins with shall we say a lot of losses.  Just so you know many of the other teams have 6′+(one team has a 6’5″) players and our tallest player is almost 5’8″.   The girls have had a couple close games, against Muskegon, we lost by two points at the buzzer. The highlight of this game was the six 3 point shots scored by Joslyn TenBrink. Last Tuesday we played West Ottawa and finished down by three with an opportunity to tie at the end of the game. Tuesday, January 14th we play at home against Zeeland East.

JV Girls Basketball – The JV Girls struggled a bit this week against West Ottawa and Rockford, two of the better teams in the OK-Red.  Eight of the ten girls did score Tuesday at West Ottawa, but their energy level was down on the defensive end allowing West Ottawa’s offense to have its way with us.  The final score was 53-26.  Thursday we kissed Rockford goodbye in our last game against them before moving to the White Division next year.  The game was a testimony to why this change is necessary for our program as the girls were defeated by a score of 39-19.  Leading scorers for the JV girls for the week were Alisha Boom and Jenna Woodward with 12 total points and freshman Jessica McCarty added 8 points over the two games.  The girls’ spirits are up as they head into the final two weeks of the season and they are optimistic that they can scratch out a couple more victories in the last four games of the season!

Freshman Girls Basketball – The Freshmen Girls’ Basketball Team has had a challenging month.  They have had a string of losses that does not reflect the improvements seen from the stands.  On the court, the girls are beginning the game, and playing throughout, with more positive energy, focus and competition.  They benefit greatly from all the clear feedback throughout the game. The plays are not yet consistently smooth but the girls are working the plays and working as a team much better. Being that many of the girls have not played together and that there are various levels of experience on this team, the improvements are welcome and the result of the team’s and coach’s hard work. The girls had the chance to play a game coached by Coach Doby and Coach Al when Coach Tanya had to be away. This was a positive experience for the team. Hopefully, the team will be able to come out on the winning side of a game or two by the season’s end. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer the team on at the next game – Tuesday night, (tomorrow)- Feb. 14th – here at home at 4:30 against Zeeland East!  Thanks!  Also, we thank Athletic Boosters for all the hard work in the Putting on the Pink Night/Raffle this past Friday!  What an awesome night for the community…and for Girls’ Basketball!

Boys Bowling – On Saturday January 28, the boys battled in the Red Hawk Tournament at Westgate Lanes. Leading the team to the final eight, was Andrew Mouat who posted a solid 658 series and also placed fifth amongst all bowlers. The momentum continued when the boys won their match against East Kentwood 24-6. Jake Hearn scored a match high series of 441. After taking down the Muskegon Big Reds, on Wednesday 2/8, the team raised their record to 3-6.

Girls Bowling – On Saturday January 28, the girls also attended the Red Hawk Tournament, determined to make their mark. The girls made it to the final eight teams, before bowing out to Mona Shores. The Lady Keglers came up short in their next match against East Kentwood. Leading scorer for the Lady Cats, was Courtney Austin with a fine 320 series. Regrouping from their loss, the Lady Cats won their next match against the Muskegon Big Reds. Leading the way was Anna Ges.

Varsity Competitive Cheer – The Varsity cheerleaders are reaching the peak of their season and striving to peak in time for District competition on February 18th.  They competed the last weekend in January at the Lake Michigan Competitive Cheer Officials Association scholarship competition and one of their senior cheerleaders, Kelsey McKinney, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  All of our seniors are amazing and we wish we could award them all scholarships, but we are very proud to have at least one of our seniors selected for this honor.  This competition gave out over $11,000 in scholarship money to competitive cheerleaders!  The first weekend in February, the cheerleaders competed at Lowell and improved their total scores by over 20 points from their previous competition.  They continue to work hard and keep improving every day!

JV Competitive Cheer  JV had a fantastic year. Overall they ended with a close 4th in the OK Red conference. They had 8 competitions this season, that includes finishes of 2 first place wins, 2 second place wins. In this very competitive conference these girls were close in every competition and continued to break their goals. They have beaten school records in points in both Rounds 1 and 2 this year. They are a very talented 21 ladies that I have enjoyed coaching thoroughly.

Varsity/JV Dance – In January the JV and Varsity Dance teams hosted a Dance Invitational at Jenison with over 25 teams in attendance which was a great fundraiser.  The Teams attended the Palace Competition at the Palace of Auburn Hills on January 21st where the Varsity Team placed 9th out of 14 teams. We moved up 3 places from last year which was a huge accomplishment. We consider this competition a “state” competition.

Varsity HockeyThe varsity hockey team has had to overcome some obstacles in the last month especially having to cope with several players lost to injury or ineligibility.  They have won and lost some hard fought games.  They continue to play hard and are looking forward to ending the season with a string of wins.  The team had a 10 game winning streak at home (Georgetown Ice Center) through the end of January until a loss to Okemos in early February.   Their record in January was 3-3 while going 2-2 in conference games.  Their overall record through February 11th is 10-10 (4-4 in conference).  There are four games left on the schedule.  The one remaining home game is on February 18 @ 530PM vs. GR Christian.  This is our “CANCER FACE OFF GAME”.  Jenison Hockey has teamed up with the VanAndel Institute and Milan’s Miracle Fund (milansmiraclefund.org) to raise awareness of, and help fund, pediatric cancer research especially brain tumors.

PowerliftingThe team travelled to Kelloggsville and did exceptionally well.  Our women lifters took 2nd place as a team.  Our JV Boys and our Varsity Boy’s team placed first.  We had several champions as well.
Garrett Jollands and Josh Hoogendoorn travelled to the Traverse City West meet and both took first place in their weight classes.  Josh finished within 30 pounds of the state record in his first meet of the season.

Varsity Boys Swim/Dive – The swim and dive team have been holding their own with other teams in the conference, but don’t quite seem to have the depth of the other teams.   An example is the 9th and 10th grade invite at Grandville.  Our boys excelled in the relays and took firsts in other events, but couldn’t come up with enough points for the victory.  They took a third which exceeded the expectations of the coaches.    The relays continue to be our strong point.  As the taper begins this week we can expect lower and lower times and may have a few more swimmers state qualified.   The last meet is this Thursday at Grandville with conference swim and dive starting on February 23rd at East Kentwood.   Please try to make these to cheer our swimmers on as they gear up for the end of the season.

Varsity WrestlingThe wildcats were in action over the past couple of weeks as they competed in the CJ Crowe invite hosted at Jenison High school the wildcats went 2-2 on the day and saw some tough competition as they battled and wrestled tough all day, and then the wildcats competed at cross town rival Grandville which turned out to be a back and forth dual all night where Grandville raced out to a lead and the wildcats charged right back only to fall short in a close dual. On February 9th the wildcats will get another shot at Grandville as they have drawn the bulldogs in the first round of team districts, the coaching staff is excited about this rematch as well as the wrestlers.  On February 1st the wildcats hosted the Rams of Rockford for their final dual of the season, the wildcats showed no signs of backing down from the heavy favored Rams, the wildcats dropped the dual 48-23 the score does not show justice in all the close matches that could of gone either way. The wildcats were in action at the OK RED Conference tournament this past Saturday as all the boys competed hard all day. Placing for the wildcat were Trent Samuels as he went on to win his fourth consecutive conference title, Juan Maya who battled to a third place finish and George Martinez who placed Fourth. Great job to all the wrestlers! This is a bitter sweet for the wildcats as they have wrestled there last conference dual and conference tournament in the OK RED, the wildcats have competed in the OK RED since it was established, and will now move to the OK WHITE division next year.

JV WrestlingFor the first time in 9 years, the Jenison JV Wrestling Team came out on top of Rockford. The JV team went 7-2 against the Rams. This year was the most successful year our Jr Varsity has had in the past 9 years. Each wrestler improved over the course of the season, which is essential for future success on the Varsity Level.   Junior Varsity is often overlooked, but these wrestlers are the future of our program here at Jenison. As coaches, we received many compliments from former coaches, current coaches, members of Administration, and fans for our ability to set the tone for the Varsity duals. Coaches Paiz, Flynn, J. Smith, E. Smith, and Krepps are all proud of their performance this year and are excited for what the future holds for these young men.

Jenison Athletic Booster Meeting, January 9, 2012

Varsity Boys Basketball – The Jenison Varsity Boys Basketball team (1 – 4) got their first win at home Friday (1/6 against Granville) 57 – 46. The boys started the season playing well but did not have a win in the first four starts – coming up short by a total of 10 points over the four game periods.  That includes a two point loss to Hudsonville (a Top 10 area pre-season pick of The Grand Rapids Press) 56 – 58 on January 3 and a four point loss to Tri Unity Christian, a team that beat Hudsonville by four points.  The Wildcat boys have a solid core of senior starters including Eric Evans, Tyler Fredricks, Cory Berrigear and Nick Winchell as well a Sophomore Luke Diekevers.  A solid bench includes Juniors Dakota Mekkes, Cooper Logsdon, Trent Baar, Travis Schuitema, Colin Nyboer, Austin Duval and Sophomore CJ Van Timmeren who also started one game.  The Cats are sure to win their share of games this season . . . games are every Tuesday and Friday now through February.  Come on out and see the action – we need to get that gym rockin!!

JV Boys Basketball – The Jenison JV Basketball team has started off the season with a 3-2 record.  They pulled off great wins against Caledonia and Wyoming Park to start the season at 2-0.  They lost a thriller to Tri-unity with a chance to win at the end of the game but came up short losing by one.  In the fourth game of the season we came up short against Hudsonville.  They rebounded from that lose and traveled to Grandville and got a big win on the road.  The team continues to improve in all aspects of the game each day and is looking forward to their conference opponents.

Freshman Boys Basketball – Week by week, game by game, the freshmen boys’ basketball team has been learning to play together.  After starting out the season 0-3 with a couple of lopsided losses on the road against two traditionally strong programs and four-point setback at the hands of Hopkins, the team played as one and notched their first victory of the season over Wellspring Prep Academy 64-35.  Last week we saw the boys battle two cross-town rivals in very competitive games with a setback at home against the Eagles of Hudsonville and a 5 point loss on the road to Grandville.  Next up are the Panthers of West Ottawa.

Varsity Girls Basketball – The Varsity Girls started the season off with a win against Kenowa, followed by a loss to Northview. They took on Zeeland West who was next on their schedule, success a 43 – 32 victory.  The team headed to the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament with determination and played Zeeland East this time and again pulled off a win. With this win they were in the finals against Forest Hills Eastern-this game these girl’s never gave up.  Being down at one time by 15 points, the team “took baby steps” and with 2 minutes and 30 seconds left in the game they took over the lead.  Needless to say the last two minutes were very exciting as the team pulled out a win.  Final score was 40 – 38.   Unfortunately, we lost our game at Hudsonville last week Tuesday.  The team is 4 and 2 at this writing.  The team is playing at home Tuesday, January 10th against West Ottawa

JV Girls Basketball – The JV Girls are off to a great start this year.  They won their first 5 games.  The 3rd and 4th wins took place in the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament where they defended the championship they earned last year!  The most difficult and exciting game their first tournament game versus Zeeland East where they came back from a 6 point deficit to defeat Zeeland East by 3 points.  Alyssa Doby was the leading scorer of the tournament and was voted the MVP.  Jenna Woodward and Alisha Booms also made the All-Tournament team!  Coach Doby’s favorite team stat is the 22.2 points per game that the girls allowed their opponents through the first five games to 34.6 points per game for the Lady Wildcats.  Last week things got a bit tougher as we entered OK-Red Conference play.  The girls suffered a close loss at Hudsonville and another tough loss to Grandville; nonetheless, they will tighten up the laces and keep on battling this week!

Freshman Girls Basketball – The 2012 Freshmen Girls’ Basketball team has had a challenging month. They have faced 7 opponents both in and out of conference and currently hold a record of 3 wins (Kenowa Hills, Zeeland West, and Zeeland East) and 4 losses (Northview, Greenville, Hudsonville, and Grandville).  That record includes coming in at 2nd place in the Cornerstone Classic.  The girls meet for Team dinners on the weekend and have been able to go see the Pistons and Bulls play at the NBA level thanks to a parent. Coach Tanya reported that their last practice was their best yet and that she is making adjustments with the team as the season moves along.

Boys/Girls Bowling – We are currently in the middle of our conference season and have tournaments scheduled on the weekends through the middle of Jan.   Boys are 0-2, and according to Coach Tim, the girls are “A work in Progress” but improving every week.   We have had multiple non-conference matches and tourneys so our record does not reflect on how well the team is actually performing.  Even if we had a loss, it might be by only 2 pins per person or per match so Tim is pleased with the results-at least as far as the boys are concerned!  Jenison boys were ranked 9th before the break so we shall see what happens next week when we meet against Grand Haven and East Kentwood!

Varsity Competitive Cheer – The Jenison Varsity Cheerleading team has had a good start for such a young team.  They started the year off with a second place finish at the CCCAM (pronounced CAM) Scholarship meet followed by a second place finish at the Mona Shores Invitational December 20th.  They finished 6th in a tough conference that features four teams from last year’s state finals and then went on to come back with a strong showing at the Byron Center Invitational this past Saturday where they won first place, both in their division and overall.  This young team is full of talents.  The ladies continue to work hard to make improvements so they can achieve their long term goals for the end of the season.

Varsity Hockey – Jenison Varsity capped off a successful December with impressive wins over Kalamazoo United and Portage Northern to win their holiday tournament, the Mike Viglione Invitational, hosted at the Georgetown Ice Center.  The hockey team’s record in December was 5-2 including wins over Hudsonville, West Ottawa and Grand Rapids Public.  The two losses came in solid matchups between teams from Holt and Bay City Central.  The overall varsity hockey record through 2011 is 7-4.  Student support at home games has been tremendous so far this season.  Several Tier III conference games are scheduled for January including a Tier III showcase tournament.  Homes games in January include 1/13 (630pm) vs. Northview; 1/14 (530pm) vs. Manistee; and 1/27 (630pm) vs. Unity Knights.

Varsity Boys Swim/Dive – No update given at time of print

Varsity Wrestling – The Jenison wrestling team was in action this past Wednesday, as we squared off against the East Kentwood Falcons, the falcons jumped out to a 21-0 lead, the wildcats tried to recover but the deficit was too big as the wildcats lost 49-24. Winning for the wildcats were, Juan Maya, Steve Elzinga, Dylan Wyngardeb, Trent Samuels, and Eric Rose. The Varsity will be in action this Saturday at the Detroit Catholic Central tournament.

JV Wrestling – The JV team had success on the wrestling mat against East Kentwood, Coach Flynn is pleased with the success that his team is having this season. Winning for the wildcats were, Alex Mangala, Dan Burkholder, Scott Hawkes Jr., Anthony Tatro and George Martinez. The JV team will be in action this Saturday at the East Kentwood tournament.

Jenison Athletic Booster Meeting, October 10, 2011

Varsity Cheer – The varsity cheerleaders are enjoying what has been a very good season.  They put a lot of hard work into their Homecoming routine, which showed during their exceptional performances at the pep assembly and at halftime of the homecoming football game.  In addition, they continue to work on new skills in gymnastics and stunting, as well as learning new cheers to encourage the fans to cheer for the Wildcat Football team.  As the season winds down, they’re focusing on finishing up their work with the Cub Cheerleading program, which has doubled in size this year, and preparing for this Friday night’s Wounded Warrior game at Grandville.

JV Cheer – The girls have been doing a wonderful job cheering on the JV football team & getting the crowd excited & full of that WILDCAT PRIDE! We would also like to Thank Leroy and the JV football coaches for being so supportive of the girls and taking time out to Thank them after & during each game!

Boys Cross Country – no report available

Girls Cross Country – Although are team is currently dealing with several challenges- including a variety of normal running injuries, mono, pink eye, bronchitis, irregular heartbeat, etc….  we continue to press forward at an impressive pace.  Since we met last month, our ladies captured the Sparta Invitational championship for the 4th consecutive year with 25 of 26 runners that day hitting their seasons best time, placed 3rd at the Cougar/Falcon Invite behind two state ranked teams, and this past weekend finished 16th out of 40 schools at the Portage invite while missing 2 of our top 5 runners. Our motto for the season is a quote by Henry Ford- ” Coming together is the beginning, Keeping together is progress, working together is success”.  With 21 new athletes in our program, this challenge has at times been daunting but they continue to be great people, have great attitudes and give great effort.  Jenison Girls Cross Country…..Bound by the run.

Varsity Football – Been right in the hunt until the 4th quarter for the past four weeks.  Tied in the 4th against Hudsonville and EK, tied late in the third against Grand Haven, and taking a 0-0 tie into the half against a great Muskegon team we continue to whittle away at opportunities to win.  Remaining games are Grandville and Rockford.

JV Football – Been very successful in all areas of the game despite some challenging injuries.  Entire group has stepped up and played extremely hard.  Huge win against Muskegon.  Lost 24-20 to an undefeated EK team, and lost a very tough game last week to Hudsonville 7-6.  This is an excellent group of young men determined to make this program proud.

Freshman Football – Team continues to improve, with closest game of the year last week against Hudsonville.  Kids have great attitude and have been very tough in their quest to improve in every facet of the game.

Varsity Girls GolfOn September 29 the girls finished league play with 4th place in the post conference tournament.  Anna Hoezee and Merissa Kerner were unanimous selections to the ALL CONFERENCE TEAM!!!!  And Jessica Olearczyk earned an Honorable Mention.

JV Girls Golf – no report available

Varsity Boys Soccer – no report available

JV Boys Soccer – The boys had a tough year. They all played great and had a good time this season. Boys Soccer regular season ended on Monday, October 4. We ended the season on a positive note with a 4-0 win over Hudsonville. Anytime Hudsonville can lose, it’s a good day! Currently the soccer program is playing in the OK Red Conference tournament. Thursday night they opened tournament play with a loss against West Ottawa 1-0. It was a great game. All of the boys played extremely well. Monday night we will be playing at Grand Haven where the boys are hoping to redeem a regular season loss to the Buccaneers. There will be one more game for the JV team, and that is all determined on how the Varsity team does Monday night.   A lot of the boys are looking forward to playing indoor soccer at soccerzone, and working towards making the varsity team next year

Freshman Boys Soccer – No report available

Varsity Girls Swim/Dive – The swimmers are currently 3 and 4. We are in the dog days of our schedule where the two practices a day are getting to us  We are tired, yet in each of our last three meets we have risen to our competition and had fifty or more personal best performances in each.  We the coaches consider it a good meet if we have forty to forty five.  We are getting better.

Varsity Tennis – No report available

JV Tennis – No report available

Varsity Volleyball – Varsity Volleyball overall record 13-21, conference record 1-4.  The varsity volleyball team has made some big strides from the beginning of the season.  We are still working on staying confident and eliminating our unforced errors.  We are a very undersized team however we make up for it with our scrappy defense.  We have been able to frustrate teams with our defense.  We have improved from playing just a few points a game to our complete potential, to playing full games at our potential.  Our goal is to play entire matches at our potential and maintain our intensity throughout by districts.  As the season winds down we are looking forward to districts and have a team goal to take districts as regional’s this year are hosted at Jenison.

JV Volleyball – The JV team is currently at 48-5 overall record! 4-1st place victories out of 7 tournaments. We have 3 games and one more tournament left. We just had a 16 game winning streak beating each team in 2 games! Highlight: At our Rockford invite we swept Rockford, Grandville, Fruitport, Cath. Central, WO, and Portage central all in 2 games.

Freshman Volleyball – The Freshman Volleyball team has had a great season to date.  Our record is 39-1.  We are very proud of the way all the girls are playing and have executed some terrific wins.  Most recently we have beaten Grandville in 2 games, and before that we had a very tough night against the Hudsonville Eagles.  The Eagles took it to 3 games, but Jenison came out with the WIN due to some intense focus and determination from our girls.  We have taken 1st place in all but 1 of our all day Saturday tournaments as well.  We are all looking forward to a strong finish to the season!

Varsity Boys Water Polo -The boys Varsity Water Polo team is currently ranked 6th in the state, with 2 remaining games left.  We are hosting Grandville tonight, it is our senior night, and begin the district tournament next week.

JV Boys Water Polo – We are currently 10-6 up to today.  We have been steadily improving and could easily be 12-4.  Our boys had a lot of trouble with the shallow end of the pool at Hudsonville, but they bounced back the next meet and beat a JV/varsity combination team at East Grand Rapids.  No current fundraiser going on at this time.
